Upper School
Welcome to the Upper School
Academic excellence stands at the center of a Spence education. Our students work with an outstanding faculty possessing high expectations of them and a firm understanding of the challenges of adolescence and unique joys and opportunities of teaching in an all-girls’ environment. Spence subscribes to the idea that its educational environment is the most powerful way for girls to gain and maximize the scholastic voice and leadership skills they will need once they graduate.
In Upper School classrooms, we know that teaching our students to engage multiple perspectives is essential to their education. Our curriculum is designed to include a variety of voices that open up the classroom to a larger world so that a girl can find herself, her race, her ethnicity and her culture reflected in what she studies. A Spence education is an intellectual journey that is engaging, powerful and purposeful.

Science Classes
In addition to physics, chemistry and biology, students have the option to choose from a number of science electives, such as forensic science, topics in bioethics and topics in environmental ethics. -
Guest Speakers
Each year, Spence invites distinguished speakers—scientists, artists, authors, poets, politicians, environmentalists and activists—to speak to students and visit classes. -
Sculpture Class
In sculpture and 3-D design class, students are introduced to a variety of traditional and nontraditional materials and techniques. -
Atrium
Students work in the atrium, a space full of natural light, during a free period. -
Career Day
On Career Day, students get a chance to connect with alumnae. -
Math Class
In math classes, students develop flexible and efficient problem-solving skills. -
Visiting Author Program
Spence welcomed poet Naomi Shihab Nye, a poet, songwriter and novelist, to speak to Upper School students in 2018. -
School Spirit
The Upper School and Spencer the Saber gather for a pep rally during Spirit Week. -
Varsity Soccer Team
This fall, the Sabers will take a talented group and begin the process of acquiring experience that forms a strong foundation for long-term success. -
Outdoor Spaces
A teacher meets with a group of students in the sun on the 4th Floor Terrace. -
Swim Team
A Stingray dives in during a swim meet. -
In the Hallway
Spence offers plenty of spaces for students to hang out or study. -
The Commons
Students study collaboratively in the 2nd Floor Commons. -
A Walk Through School
Students cross the connecter and enter the Upper School home in the Townhouse. -
The Stage
Students present "Scapino!" based on one of Molière's plays. -
ISR Symposium
In Independent Science Research (ISR), students have the unique opportunity to delve deeply into an aspect of science that fascinates them. -
Cafeteria
The cafeteria offers breakfast, lunch and a place to study. -
Gathering
The Upper School gets together once each week for announcements and presentations.
