Spence's Language Immersion Program offers an exciting opportunity for students to have a linguistic and cultural immersion experience in French, Spanish or Mandarin. The program provides students with real-life and hands-on experiences that are different from classroom learning situations. All of the instruction is done in the target language, and teachers help students understand the language through various techniques: visuals, body language, repetition and acting.

As much as possible, teachers take students out of the classroom to visit various parts of NYC and interact with native speakers of French, Spanish and Mandarin. Both at Spence and in the city, students cook, dance, sing, speak, create art and play sports all in their language of choice. The low teacher to student ratio encourages students to speak as much as possible in the target language while still enjoying themselves.

Drop-off and pick-up are at the Spence School at 22 East 91st Street at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. Students must bring water, a nut-free lunch and snack every day. Students should wear comfortable clothes and footwear.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Nancy Grey, Program Director.
  • Program Goals

The program is designed to offer spontaneous opportunities for students to practice their language skills in a non-classroom environment. It is designed to mimic the process of first- language acquisition, and as such, vocabulary and grammar structures are taught in an organic, as-need basis. Teachers scaffold lessons to make language learning meaningful.
Each language documents its daily activities on our blogs. Click on the links below to see what our students have done each day in past summers!
