All-School Assembly Celebrates Earth
Spence’s spring all-school assembly—three annual gatherings that bring the entire school community together—culminated with a celebration of the Earth this April.
As Kindergarten through Grade 12 students processed into Brick Church, Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move” played, as well as a slideshow of photos of faculty and staff immersed in nature.
Kindergarten students opened the assembly with “The Tree Song,” followed by a welcome and message of thanks from Head of School Bodie Brizendine.
Grade 8 students Kate T. and Brooke H. then shared an assignment they worked on in Earth Science class where they were asked to write a story about what the beginning of the Earth was like. One story was from the perspective of another planet watching Earth form, while another was from the perspective of a young star learning about supernovae and planet formation.
Lower School students Mackenzie M., Alice K., Isabella F., Kaila M., Channing M., Sally D. and Reed R. then spoke about their favorite ways to enjoy the Earth. Some of their responses were looking at trees in the park, going hiking, going to the beach and making sandcastles, planting flowers and hugging trees.
The School also watched “Where In NYC Is Spencer,” a video produced by News 91 about the School’s mascot spending a day out in the town.
Kai S. and Nikki D., seniors who took Advanced Biology last semester, discussed their experiences learning about ecology and environmental biology. They showed photos from their field guides and field sites and talked about learning more about the plants in Central Park and a site of their choosing.
The assembly concluded with two songs from the Roedean Girls Choir, who were visiting Spence from Johannesburg, South Africa.
