Sabers Enjoy Strong Performances at the Loucks Games
With a meet record of over 3,600 student-athletes from across the US, Canada and Caribbean, the Loucks Games was another exciting and highly competitive meet meet for the Sabers to continue to sharpen their claws for the post-season.
Senior, Frances L. scored a Spence school record of record 3193 as she captured second place in the Pentathlon. The Pentathlon is 5 events (100m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and 800m run) over the course of two days. Frances set personal best Loucks pentathlon marks in 4 of the 5 events, including a brilliant 800m run of 2:21.78, the best time of the field of over 30 competitors.
That was not the only memorable Spence performance as 8th Grader, Maggie H. finished 14th in the 800m Run with a strong time of 2:17.17.In the 400m Run, sophomore, Sophie A. finished 21st (58.87) with a dramatic win in her heat and Natalie Bernstein (59.65) also finished in the top 35 of the 117 competitors in the event.
Senior, Briana W. embodied the truest definition of "success" in her return to the Loucks Games after a year away from the track. Briana has continued to refine her performance against top level competition in the 200m, with her eye on the upcoming AAIS and NYSAIS championships. Her time of 28.74 is evidence of her hard work to return to top form for when the team will need her most, in the stretch run of the season.
In the final event of the day, the Sabers' 4x400m relay demonstrated once again they are one of the most competitive teams in region. In the 22 teams competing, Spence was seeded in the 2nd heat. Sophomore, Natalie B. led off with strong leg before handing the baton to senior, Keishan C. for one of her strongest 400's of the season. Keishan got boxed out at the handoff and had to veer to make the connection with Maggie who quickly closed the gap and handed off to Sophie A. for the anchor with the team in 3rd place. Sophie pushed the team to 2nd immediately and then ran shoulder to shoulder with the anchor from New Rochelle and willed the Sabers to the heat victory by a mere .22 of a second. The team's time of 4:02.28 placed the team 8th overall.
