Spence’s Math Team Claims Top Honors

Congratulations to the Middle School Math Team for its fourth-place finish and lead win among all Independent Schools in last weekend’s MATHCOUNTS Manhattan competition at New York University!
On Saturday, February 1, a Spence delegation chosen from the Middle School Math Team earned the highest ranking among participating NYC Independent Schools, placing fourth overall in the prestigious MATHCOUNTS competition, an annual “showcase for the knowledge, skill, speed and teamwork of the top ‘Mathletes’” from schools throughout the City. The Manhattan chapter of MATHCOUNTS is arguably one of the most competitive, featuring 30 schools and more than 300 students.

Special congratulations go to all participants, the four members comprising our official team, Caitlyn C. (Grade 8), Grace F. (Grade 8), Hanna Y. (Grade 8) and Sophia C. (Grade 6), and individual competitors, Elise B. (Grade 8), Mary Ben A. (Grade 7), Lola D. (Grade 6), Sydney K. (Grade 6), Clara M. (Grade 6) and Peridot P. (Grade 6). Of particular note, Hanna placed 11th individual overall and represented Spence in the single-elimination Countdown Round.

The Math Team’s impressive fourth-place finish marks the best result to date for a group that was first formed three years ago. The team has demonstrated a steady climb: placing ninth in the same competition last year and winning “most improved school,” a distinction given for rising from placing 23rd a year prior to that. This big win for the team adds to an already impressive year for the Spence Middle School Math Team, led by Math teacher Chris Macmeikan, after they earned a spot on the School Merit Roll at the November American Math Competition. Nearly 40 Spence students competed in that event, receiving a host of individual and team honors.

The Spence School is proud of the girls’ remarkable growth as a team and this year’s accomplishments!
