Visual Arts

The Middle School Visual Arts Program in Grades 5 through 8 is designed to ensure that students retain the aesthetic sensibility and the love of art-making as they develop through adolescence. The art curriculum allows students to explore different subject areas and mediums through projects that help them foster their personal expression and technical mastery. It also ensures that each student feels equipped to express their voice, appreciate their mistakes, and take creative risks.

Middle School Visual Arts Curriculum

List of 4 items.

  • Grade 5

The Grade 5 curriculum focuses on the exploration and transformation of materials. By matching their ideas to the materials at hand, students discover that plans are made in the process and that problems can have multiple solutions. Projects introduce students to new techniques and opportunities to work with various media, including, but not limited to, paint, cardboard construction, paper-maché, and clay.
  • Grade 6

In Grade 6, students develop personal imagery and visual vocabulary in two and three dimensions. Projects emphasizing experimentation and exploration offer students the opportunity to work with a variety of materials, including paint, pastel, wire, paper-mâché, and found objects.
  • Grade 7

The Grade 7 curriculum combines skill-building with open-ended prompts, allowing students to express themselves authentically and confidently. Projects engage students in exploring a range of media and techniques related to drawing, painting, sewing, sculpture, printmaking, and collage. Through these experiences, students strengthen observational skills, develop creative problem-solving strategies, and articulate personal ideas through visual language.
  • Grade 8

Grade 8 art classes are divided into semester-long courses allowing for students to study two of the following mediums:

    Photography
This course offers an introduction to the principles and practices of traditional chemical photography with a focus on photograms and printing. Students will learn to work with light-sensitive materials, gaining hands-on experience in exposing and developing photographic prints in a darkroom setting. Emphasis is placed on understanding photographic exposure and applying that knowledge to the creation of technically sound and visually compelling images.

    Ceramics
Students acquire fundamental hand-building skills in clay while incorporating creative problem-solving through design, exploring techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab construction.

    Printmaking
Students explore a range of printmaking methods in both two- and three-dimensional forms, creating multiples through the use of conventional and unconventional tools and materials.
