Middle School
Welcome to the Middle School
We’re a noisy, messy school in really good ways. There is such joy in guiding our Middle Schoolers as they begin to define their talents and interests, develop important study skills and take on increased responsibility as members of the school community. We believe that deep, sustained learning is underpinned by relationships: students with their teachers who support and facilitate each individual’s progress, as well as students with their peers who work collaboratively in classrooms and advisory groups. With the support of teachers, advisors, grade deans and coaches, students become more independent in their learning, more critical in their thinking and they begin to exercise leadership skills.

During a field trip to the Botanical Gardens, Grade 5 students work together to identify and document species of plant life common in the area. -
Each year brings a new focus for Middle School students in computer science and engineering, from semester-long electives in game coding and design to rigorous year-long courses in robotics and physical computing. -
In class, students present their solutions to problems, identifying key concepts and surprising connections between mathematical ideas as they emerge. -
The Middle School drama curriculum helps develop a foundation of technique through classroom exercises and presentations that carry them toward performing before an audience at the annual play. -
Entering Grade 5, students may choose to continue their study of Spanish or begin a new language, either Chinese or French. In Grade 7, students may elect to enroll in a two-year program in Chinese or Latin, in addition to their current language. -
The Middle School Dance Company, open to students in Grades 6-8, culminates in a performance at Symphony Space. -
In addition to learning how to form focused research questions and critically evaluate sources, Middle School students browse fiction titles alongside Upper School students, fostering a lifelong love of reading. -
In Grade 7 history, students address questions surrounding the Postclassical world through the historical and cultural lenses of Europe, Japan and Africa.
