The Spence Squash team capped off a week of AAIS Championships with a ROAR, defeating Brearley 7-0 to earn their AAIS Championship title. The match was played in a packed den at 412, in front of the Spence Community, many attending their first ever squash match. 

 

The fans were treated to tremendous squash matches, most notably on the feature court. Senior, Paloma G. fought back in a see-saw 5-game affair, with long and fiercely intense rallies. Both players chased down the ball and extended play with their remarkable speed and quickness. Ultimately, Paloma hit an unreturnable deep lob into the back corner of the court on match-point, to win. 

 

Fellow senior, Annie K. followed Paloma’s match with an epic win of her own. Annie employed an aggressive up-tempo match strategy and stayed the course when challenged by her very strong opponent. Annie’s poise under pressure was on full display in the 2^nd game of the match, twice staring down game point and fighting back to win the pivotal game 13-11, on her way to securing the 3-game match victory.  

 

Spence victories from Annesely A., Megan L., Ellie K., Bracie A. and Paige L. rounded out the Sabers’ 7-0 Championship performance. The Championship gave the Sabers their AAIS “3-peat.” Following their first AAIS Championship title in program history, in the 2018-2019 season, Spence successfully defended that title in 2019-2020 before earning their third on Friday.

 

Spence, at 13-0 is the #1 seed in the NYSAIS Championship tournament and will play in the NYSAIS semifinal on Wednesday. Spence is again seeded among the top 16 teams in the nation for the US Squash High School Team National Tournament, February 25-27 in Philadelphia, PA.
