Cross Country Races to Another Historic Moment at NYSAISAA Championship!

In what has been a fall season chock full of Spence team “bests,” it was fitting that on the final day of the season, the Sabers’ Cross Country team closed out the fall with another historic moment in school history.

Eleven years ago, Spence Cross Country ran its first season of competition. This fall, the Sabers finished a program best 2nd at the AAIS Championship and on a crisp, brilliant, late autumn Sunday morning, took to the course at Van Cortlandt Park ready to pounce on another historic moment at the NYSAISAA Championship. In the fall of 2018, the Sabers finished 6th at NYSAISAA, setting the program standard for best team finish. The 2019 harriers took to the trail chasing history, and they would catch it by the tail!

The NYSAISAA Championship race featured 166 runners and Sabers raced out to hunt in packs, working together to claw past opponents and grab places and points for their team. The Big Cats were paced by sophomore Maddie S., who, as she had at the AAIS Championship on Monday, was the first Spence runner to cross the tape, placing 18th overall with a time of 21:30.93. Just behind Maddie, was freshman Skylar P. finishing 23rd at 21:57.12. Skylar’s classmate Honey H. and senior Emma H. finished 34th and 35th respectively. The Saber’s 5th runner, senior Caroline C., garnered 40th place. Freshman Lucy M. finished 56th and junior Daniella F-R. placed 64th. Julia F., Lucy R. and Kayla D. rounded out the blue wave’s outstanding day in the course.

When all was tallied, Spence finished 3rd overall at the NYSAISAA XC Championship, the best team performance in Spence history.

Congratulations to the entire Spence Cross Country Team on their 3rd place NYSAISAA Championship finish. The True Blue performance was a fitting end to a memorable fall season for the Sabers! Onward to the winter season!
