Sabers’ Cross Country Team Races to AAIS 2nd Place Finish
The Spence Cross Country team added another historic moment to the incredible fall of 2019, clawing their way to a 2nd place finish in the AAIS Cross Country Championship on Monday, October 28. In the regular season, the Sabers had finished 3rd in the league standings, trailing Sacred Heart by a single point. On a picturesque late autumn afternoon, the Big Cats would flip the script on the the 4K Championship course, “running fast and taking chances,” edging out their neighborhood rivals by two points and earning the 2nd place trophy and securing the program’s best AAIS Cross Country Championship finish in the team’s 11-year history.
The Sabers were led by sophomore Maddie S., who finished 9th with a time 17:04. The freshmen duo of Skylar P. and Honey H. finished 11th and 13th respectively. In the scoring of team Cross Country meets, the lower the score, the better, so each and every place matters! With the experience of previous championships guiding them, seniors Caroline C. (15th) and Emma H. (21st) raced past their opponents’ 4th and 5th scoring runners, to collect the critical scoring places necessary to secure the team’s 2nd place overall finish. Freshman Lucy M. (30th) and senior Lucy R. (45th) rounded out the top 7 for the Sabers’ historic run. For the second consecutive season, all 5 of the Spence scoring runners finished in the top 25, earning medals.
Spence will look to ride the momentum of the True Blue wave into Sunday’s NYSAISAA Championship at Van Cortlandt Park.
