Alumna Sarah Kushner ’05 Speaks with Upper School Students
Alumna Sarah Kushner ’05 returned to Spence to share memories of her time as a student and to shed light on what life is like for an Assistant United States Attorney during an Upper School Assembly.
Taking students back to her time at Spence, she showed her old yearbook and her senior yearbook page while noting the value of her enduring friendships with classmates. “The friendships you make at Spence are some of the most lasting things that you take away from school,” she said.
Kushner shared insights about her many experiences as a lawyer, which includes clerking for a judge, litigating at a large firm and her current role as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. She took students into her courtroom experience, detailing for them what it’s like to be in trial and how every day her work is different with its range of investigative and courtroom responsibilities.
Beyond academics, Kushner played volleyball, danced and enjoyed working on The Voice while at Spence, all of which she said prepared her for her profession in law. “There’s an emphasis on academics here, but activities, sports and other extracurriculars—pursuing those and learning teamwork and camaraderie along the way helped me be a well-rounded person. I found my voice at Spence. It made me a confident speaker, and that I felt like I had something to say. I learned not to be hesitant about raising my hand and speaking up.”
