Spence Cross Country's Trek to NYSAIS
On as beautiful an autumn afternoon as a runner could hope for, the Spence Cross Country Team took to the Van Cortlandt Park Cross Country trail for the AAIS XC Championship. Monday’s race was the final league race of the season and seen by many as the final tune up for the NYSAISAA Championship, set for Sunday, November 6 at Van Corlandt Park. Cross Country races have been hosted at Van Cortlandt for over 100 years and it is one of the premier courses in the Northeast, with rolling hills through the tree covered trail with yesterday’s sunshine highlighting the bright colors of autumn.
The Sabers raced into the woods against their AAIS rivals and emerged with three medalists, four runners in the top 40 of the field and a fifth place team finish, just a single point from fourth place.
Sophomore Eloise F. was the top finisher for the Sabers, finishing fifth overall with a time of 16:53.0 on the 2.5 mile challenging course. Junior, Laura F. (21) and seniors Natalie B. (22) and Caleigh A. (39) rounded out the group finishing in the top 40 of the race. Also running well for Spence in the varsity championship were juniors Hannah R. and Isa L., and freshman, Hadley H.
Spence was represented in the 2.5 mile JV race for the first time, with freshmen Emma S. and Izzy V. representing Spence, both finishing in the top 40.
The Sabers will conclude their season on Sunday at the NYSAIS Championship, where over 40 independent schools from the state will meet to race at the storied Van Corlandt Park venue.
Congratulations to the Sabers on a strong season that saw each runner achieve a new personal best performance, and good luck on Sunday!
