Sabers' Cross Country Claims 3rd at AAIS 5K Invitational
A team that first joined the Sabers’ Pack 7 years ago, the Spence Varsity Cross Country team roared early, making a historic program breakthrough early in the 2015 season. Racing in the AAIS Cross Country Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park this week, a 5K race featuring some of the top distance runners in NYC, Spence claimed the school’s first ever top 3 team finish at the Invite.
The Sabers placed two runners in the top 7 with freshmen, Maggie H. (22:21) and Cristina M. (23:01) earning individual medals for their performances. Freshman, Eloise F. (24:12) also claimed a medal finishing 19th overall, the first time Spence has ever placed 3 runners in the top 20 at the Invitational. In the clearest demonstration that Cross Country is truly a team sport, the races turned in senior, Gia S. (26:24) and junior Natalie B. (27:42) are what secured the 3rd place finish for the Sabers. The places fought for by Gia (34) and Natalie (43) were critical in edging out rival Chapin by 5 points to claim the hardware for the team’s 3rd place finish.
Congratulations to the Sabers for establishing a new benchmark for the Cross Country program and a strong start to the 2015 campaign!
