Josh Dorman Featured in NYC Public Arts Exhibition
Artwork by Spence Visual Arts Teacher Josh Dorman featured in “American Soil,” a month-long public arts exhibition sponsored by Arts Brookfield
“American Soil,” a month-long public arts exhibition sponsored by Arts Brookfield, features pieces by Spence Visual Arts Teacher Josh Dorman. The installation at One New York Plaza includes 12 7x9 windows that span the entire block of one of the largest public open spaces in downtown Manhattan.
“I paint in order to see things that would not exist if I did not paint them,” says Dorman whose large-scale paintings feature the interplay between collaged images and delicate drawn surfaces.
“American Soil,” which opened on August 24 and will run until September 25, is curated by Tom Kotik. The installation “weaves together early 1900s soil sample maps, antique collage elements and paint. Using the geography and topography of the USA as a springboard, these collage paintings manipulate the sinewy lines and rich palette of the maps, turning loamy soil regions into clouds, gravel deposit bands into mountains, rivers into snakes, legend diagrams into architecture and city grids into sparkling gems.”
Congratulations to Mr. Dorman for this first major public arts commission. Be sure to make One New York Plaza a destination to view and celebrate Mr. Dorman’s art!
