The Spence School’s Visual Arts Department hosted its 11th annual Art Fair with a display of more than 735 works of art by students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. This end-of-year, all-school arts extravaganza is a comprehensive retrospective exhibit featuring artwork by every student. The scope of the department’s lessons is on display—from pinch pots and haiku foam core sculptures to pointillist flower still life paintings and dry point etchings. Fiber arts lessons range from stitching on burlap squares and colorful loom weaving to finely stitched fabric covers for artists’ books. Self-portraits manifest themselves in pop-up paper collages, cool and warm abstractions, mosaics and abstract paintings as well as ceramic and wood sculptures, revealing creative self-expression through a variety of medium.
For the 10 members of the Visual Arts Department, preparing for the Art Fair is a yearlong endeavor, carefully selecting the works that best represent students’ imagination and skill development. Head of Visual Arts Department Laura McCallum who started the Art Fair shortly after joining Spence shares, “What is so wonderful about the Art Fair is that every student gets to see her work as a part of a formal exhibition. The fair stands for the richness of our program and the wonderful work of our faculty and students.”
A K-12 independent school in New York City, The Spence School prepares a diverse community of girls and young women for the demands of academic excellence and responsible citizenship.
