The Middle School Spelling Bee Returns

The much-anticipated Middle School Spelling Bee returned this year with over 30 participants from all four grades. Gathered in front of an audience of supportive friends, family, and faculty, students demonstrated their proficiency by correctly spelling challenging and often intricate words. Julie Abbruscato, beloved English teacher who retired last year, returned to Spence to join Camar Robinson, Elly Eisenberg and Christine Saraco from the English department, who facilitated the event and served as the judges.

The competition became more intense as they reached the 16th round. Eddie S. ’29 won first place by correctly spelling “anthropomorphic,” and Aurelia C. ’31 followed closely behind in second place. After taking a Regional Qualifying Test with Scripps, Eddie and Aurelia may go on to compete at the next level, which is the city-wide New York Spelling Bee in March. Maya T. ’28, who came in third place, will be submitted as the alternate.

Congratulations to all participants for contributing to the vibrancy, excitement, and close competition of this year's spelling bee!
