Instrumental Music
The Middle School music curriculum emphasizes the belief that the study of music develops intellect, personality and emotions. A genuine appreciation for music must be supported by an understanding of the active making of music (singing, playing, composing), by the skill of listening, and by a knowledge of a variety of musical forms and historical periods. The department also offers students opportunities to take private instrumental lessons, join the Spence Orchestra (by audition), join choral groups, and to perform in musicales, ensembles and concerts.

Private lessons in piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, French horn and saxophone may be arranged at the School. The curriculum reinforces traditional techniques and repertoire to provide a firm foundation for a variety of musical styles. Students are encouraged to explore avenues that yield self-realization and personal expression. Performance classes, grade musicales and concerts provide opportunities for performance, discussion and the sharing of instrumental music.
