Home of the Middle and Upper School

This 1929 flagship building was designed by architect John Russel Pope—who later designed the Jefferson Monument in Washington, D.C.—guided by an educational needs study by Dr. Agnes Rogers of Bryn Mawr College. The 91st Street building has undergone major renovations and expansions (1988, 2013, and 2024) to adapt to the curricular needs of a growing program and student body.

In 2008, Spence School acquired the Wanamaker-Munn townhouse on 90th Street, expanding its footprint into an adjacent historic building, and opening up more space for learning. The townhouse is now home to the Upper School.

Science Lab

In addition to a dedicated Middle School Science lab on the 10th floor, there are five science lab/classrooms on the sixth floor.
Theater

Weekly Middle and Upper School Assemblies, theater productions and lecture series are held in this 230-seat theater space.
Drawing Room

Present and past come together in the Drawing Room, which features class pictures of all Spence alumnae.
Ceramics Studio

With twelve wheels for throwing and three electric kilns, the ceramics studio holds ceramics and sculpture classes for Middle and Upper School students.
Gymnasium

Home to the Sabers, a robust Physical Education program, and numerous additional events and activities.
Atrium

The light-filled, two-story atrium is the hub of Middle and Upper School life that connects the 91st Street building and the townhouse.
Townhouse Classroom

The townhouse, which serves as Upper School’s home, features five seminar-style classrooms.
Terrace

This fourth-floor outdoor space is utilized for a host of programs–from science experiments to recess and outdoor activities.
Dining Room

The open-market kitchen, main dining hall, Student Activity Dining Room, and Atrium are contiguous spaces designed to promote connections and community with food throughout the day.
Library

A place of contemplation and concentration—and perfect for quiet conversations—the library holds an extensive fiction and non-fiction collection, the latter of which supports multiple studies.

Home of the Lower School

In 2003 Spence’s Lower School moved into the 93rd Street Baker and Lowe building, two blocks away from the Middle and Upper School campus. Historically significant as one of the last private residences to be erected in New York City in 1932, the building underwent a four-year renovation to transform the entire facility into a learning space for our youngest students. Features include a light-filled Art Studio, dance studio, Gymnasium, ample outdoor space on the Terrace and classrooms—all scaled to K-12 learning needs.

Classroom

Classroom space is scaled to accommodate our youngest students, with a layout that encourages engagement, exploration, and interaction.
Science Lab

A group space where children engage with experiments that are connected to their social studies curriculum, making careful scientific observations, recording their findings, and generating more questions.
Homeroom

Morning meetings are a great start to the day, particularly with a question of the day and community building activities. Math, literacy, and social studies learning are also based in homerooms.
Terrace

A large outdoor space to play, interact, and take pause during the busy day.
Art Studio

Adjacent to the Terrace, the large, light-filled Art Studio is always buzzing with creative energy.
Dance Studio

This studio with wall-to-wall mirrors provides an expansive space for Lower School students to learn creative expression through movement and dance.
Music Room

Singing, listening, improvising, and playing instruments—recorder, ukulele, and Orff instruments—the music room allows for group and collaborative learning.
Gymnasium

Physical education classes, dance rehearsals, Community Gatherings, and more all take place in the large lower-lever gymnasium.
Dining Room

This large dining room, which maintains much of the historic character of the building, is the busy mid-day spot for a rotation of grades that come together for lunch.
STEAM Lab

Connecting circuits and connecting disciplines, programming robots, and more in a room tailor-made for maximizing STEAM time.

412 East 90th Street

412 is Spence’s state-of-the-art athletics and education center that opened in fall 2021. Complete with a regulation-sized gymnasium, a Squash Center with nine courts, a multi-purpose room large enough to host performing arts events, and the Brizendine Center for Ecology—a laboratory classroom complete with a kitchen, greenhouse, and rooftop garden.

Classroom Space

The Brizendine Center for Ecology includes a classroom, learning kitchen, greenhouse, and rooftop garden.
Multi-Purpose Room

This double height room, with professional-grade sprung floor, barres, and theatrical lighting, is used for Upper School dance classes and hosts presentations for and by Ecology Residency students, dance and music performances, and more.
Greenhouse

Our 950-square-foot industrial greenhouse is equipped with planting tables, automated ventilation, shading and irrigation systems, and a weather station.
Rooftop Garden

The 3,150-square-foot outdoor garden features planting organized by “microclimates” and a flexible outdoor education space with work tables.
Gymnasium

Our 452-seat regulation-sized gymnasium, which allows side-by-side practice, is the home court for Sabers teams and hosts regional championship games.
Squash Center

This premier facility with nine state-of-the-art courts provides comprehensive squash opportunities for all ages and skill levels. Learn more about the 412 Squash Association.
Student Center

The student center is designed for study and social and casual gathering. It’s also the hub of after-school life for Upper School.
Kitchen

This learning kitchen, which is used as a part of multidisciplinary learning for all ecology residencies, includes six teaching cooktops serving 12 student stations.
