Spence is committed to offering students varied opportunities for extracurricular activities, building on and enhancing their school experience.

Second Act Program

Second Act, Spence's after-school program, is an activity-based program open to students in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Classes include gymnastics, dance, photography, cooking, computers, chess, drama, science, martial arts, ukulele, math and swimming. Second Act meets Monday through Thursday from 2:50-6 p.m. and on Friday from 2:50-4:30 p.m. Additional fees apply, and financial aid is available. Second Act is a co-ed program and is open to students and siblings from other schools. Please see 2018 program offerings here.

Instrumental Music Program

The instrumental music program arranges for individual instruction in classical music instruments. Violin, cello and piano lessons are available for all Lower School grades. With instructor’s approval, flute and clarinet lessons may be arranged in Grade 3, and oboe, French horn and trumpet lessons may be arranged in Grade 4. Instrumental lessons take place after school in the 91st Street building; Grades 6 through 12 lessons may be scheduled during the school day if schedules permit.Additional fees apply for individual lessons, and financial aid is available.

Instrumental Music Groups

The Concert Ensemble meets after school for students who study a string or woodwind instrument either at Spence or outside the school. Membership in this ensemble is open, by audition, to students of any grade level who can read music and are ready for a beginning ensemble experience.
 
The Chamber Orchestra meets two mornings each week. Other ensembles rehearse once a week and are open to intermediate and advanced Spence students who study strings, woodwinds or piano either at Spence or outside the school. Students may apply and audition.
