On Tuesday evening, May 17, more than 50 members of the Spence community attended the Broadway play Eclipsed, starring Lupita Nyong’o. Written by Danai Gurira, the play takes place in 2003 and tells the story of five Liberian women and their tale of survival near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. It’s the first Broadway production written by and starring exclusively women of color.
The Alumnae Association sponsored the event and alums attended from the Classes of 1955-2010. The Senior African Literature elective, taught by English teacher Sara Beasley, joined in the evening as well.
Immediately following the performance the Spence guests stayed for an intimate talk back with the actors. Special thanks to producer Pat Addiss P’71 (mother of Wendy Addiss Dellar ’71) for organizing this special evening for our community!
