Heather Evans ’76 Leads Conversation with Upper School Students

By Morgan K. ’16
On February 12, 2015, the Upper School welcomed back Spence alumna Heather Evans ’76. The informal gathering was hosted by two of the Upper School Clubs, Leadership Through History and Microfinance.

Currently global head of marketing at JP Morgan, Evans has followed a path that required both leadership and skill in the financial sphere. In her talk, Evans began by highlighting the importance of exploration and, at times, failure. After graduating Cum Laude from Harvard College in just three years, and subsequently Harvard Business School, failure was not a familiar concept. Evans, through trial and error, discovered a flair for certain fields and has since enjoyed an illustrious career. The talk attracted students in Grades 9 through 12 whose interests ranged from fashion to law to history, and who were actively engaged. The intimate setting served to strengthen the student’s direct connection with Evans. Knowing that she was once, and each of us would be, a face in a class portrait in the Drawing Room, we glimpsed the potential within ourselves.

The Leadership Through History Club strives to promote a collaborative examination of the past to enrich future leaders and competes in the National History Bowl. The Microfinance Club provides its students with a hands-on experience in microfinance by raising and lending its own funds to entrepreneurs. Each club meets regularly throughout the semester.
