Spence’s History Department seeks full-time teacher for a Middle School/Upper School to begin August 2019. This position reports to the History Department Head and represents an opportunity to work with an outstanding community of colleagues and students.

Responsibilities  
  • Teach two sections of Middle School and two sections of Upper School History
  • Serve as an advisor in the Middle School or Upper School.

Qualifications
  • is an educator with a background in race and ethnic studies seeking to join a close team of history teachers who are working together to develop a curriculum that emphasizes racial equity
  • regards collaboration as a community of adult learners as an essential component of professional growth and values working on a team
  • shows an appreciation for the craft of teaching, along with a passion for history and an interest in teaching historical thinking and writing skills
  • finds joy in working with middle school and/or high school children
  • demonstrates experience and/or interest in working with students from racially and culturally diverse backgrounds
  • approaches work with maturity, curiosity, flexibility and a sense of humor
  • enjoys a commitment that extends beyond the classroom, including a role as advisor to students and contributions to the larger school community
  • Has experience designing and leading age-relevant, challenging history discussions and writing instruction
  • History of creating a thoughtful range of analytical and creative writing assignments
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching a variety of historical texts and perspectives
  • Has agility with and commitment to middle-school and upper-school students
  • Has sustained teaching experience
  • Possesses masters degree or equivalent experience
