Director of Academic Technology

Overview

The Spence School seeks an accomplished educator to serve as a Director of Academic Technology to innovate and lead current and future programs that foster teaching, learning and assessing with technology in order to build on the school’s excellence and guide it toward future possibilities. This 12-month position, reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning, represents an opportunity to lead a K-12 team in refining its mission and in working with an outstanding caliber of colleagues and students. This position begins on July 1, 2019. The Director of Academic Technology works collaboratively with the Director of Information Technology, and both have discrete roles, responsibilities and teams for which they are responsible. The Director of Academic Technology also serves as the Academic Technologist. K-12 teaching experience and a Master’s degree are preferred.

Responsibilities

Institutional Leadership
  • Work with the Director of Curriculum and the Director of Teaching and Learning to plan K-12 Educational Technology goals and professional development, including in-service and summer technology workshops.
  • Provide leadership in the evaluation, selection and implementation of instructional technology hardware, software, and learning design.
  • Collaborate with Director of Information Technology to ensure that current and potential curricular technology implementations are best supported and maintained by Spence’s IT infrastructure and support staff.
  • Stay current on research regarding teaching, learning and assessment with technology by participating in ongoing professional development. Maintain contemporary knowledge and expertise in the fields of emerging technologies, curriculum design, and pedagogies relevant to the instructional uses of technology.
  • Collaborate with faculty on professional development opportunities, policies, and grants relevant to academic technology.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Information Technology to manage the Academic Technology budgets for academic hardware and software purchases as well as colleague’s professional development.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Information Technology on the planning and execution of Operational and Academic Technology trainings and professional development activities.
Instructional Leadership
  • Supervise and mentor Academic Technology Integrators by furthering professional development, facilitating goal-setting and evaluations and serving as an intellectual and teaching resource.
  • Work with teachers to identify opportunities for the effective integration of technology into specific lessons or projects, and support the teachers as they implement the lessons in their classrooms.
  • Demonstrate and model instructional practices that effectively utilize technology to inspire curriculum and teaching.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Serve as advisor to students in Middle School or Upper School
  • Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data regarding use of technology to support teaching and learning at Spence.
  • Serve as an account administrator or co-administrator for a variety of online educational resources (e.g., GSuite, Blackbaud onCampus).
  • Design meeting and committee structures that support the academic technology needs of the school and bring together key players for planning, training, implementation and curriculum.
  • Serving as a member of the Department Heads group, which leads conversations about program and professional development.
