Spence Winter Teams Roaring Into the Playoffs

It is that magical time of year when all of the hard work, which began back in November is being put to the test. It is not always so easy for those on the outside looking in to see how far a team or its players have come over the course of the winter season, but for the team and coaches, these final days of the season are their last opportunities to rise to the challenge to Saber The Moment!

The AAIS Playoffs begin this week and there will be email updates throughout! Come out and show your True-Blue spirit and support your Sabers!

Varsity Squash: The Sabers finished the AAIS regular season yesterday as AAIS Regular Season Co-Champions, with a 9-1 record, tied with Saint Ann’s, for the second consecutive year. By virtue of their individual AAIS match record (player wins/losses), Spence will enter the AAIS tournament as the #1 seed. As the top seed in the tournament, the Sabers will begin their quest for their second tournament championship in as many weeks on Thursday, in the AAIS Squash Semifinal vs. the winner of the #4Chapin/#5NBS quarterfinal match. Thursday’s AAIS Semifinal will be played at 4:30 p.m. at the Eastern Athletic Club in Brooklyn, home court of the Sabers.

Varsity Basketball: Varsity Basketball will finish its regular season today (Wednesday), with their final home game of the season at Spence 93rd Street vs. Chapin (4:15pm). The Sabers will play on the road on Friday, in the AAIS Quarterfinal. Where and when they play is still to be determined, based on results from league games today.  Stay tuned!!!

JV Basketball: The Sabers first season with JV basketball after a 5-year hiatus has been an unmitigated success. The team is playing its best basketball of the season, coming off back-to-back victories last week. With several impactful games in the league left to be played today and Friday, the Sabers will await their AAIS Quarterfinal opponent for Monday’s game. Stay Tuned!!

Varsity Swimming: Spence will be swimming to put a “Sting” in the competition at the AAIS Swim Championship next week! The youthful Stingrays have had strong leadership throughout from seniors, Sylvie B., Daniela F., Savy R. and Ashley Y. With a fleet of youngsters poised to make waves at the AAIS Championship, they are also pursuing spots in the first-ever NYSAISAA Swim Championships!

Varsity Indoor Track: Senior Eloise F. has been clawing the competition in the winter season. She has posted 4 personal bests (100m, 1500m, 2mile) and this past week finished 3rd with a PR of 11:44.73 in the 3200m of the prestigious Varsity Classic. Eloise is joined by classmates Sam H., Esme L., Sara Rose S. and Amanda T. as the team will be challenged to defend their 2018 AAIS Indoor Championship crown. Junior Hadley H. is poised for a strong outing at Champs, having raced to 3 personal bests (55m, 300m) and joining Eloise at the Varsity Classic with a PR in the 200m. The Sabers will be the hunted this year, the Big Cats will be entering the Championship as defending champs and with a full complement of sprinters, jumpers, distance and throwers.  Their title chase will not end with the AAIS Championship on Wednesday, February 13, at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, the Sabers will also have their eyes on a NYSAISAA prize the following week and a return to the Federation Championship in March!
