The 2019-20 Sabers won their third consecutive AAIS Indoor Track Championship in commanding fashion. They followed up the AAIS trifecta by finishing 2nd in the 2020 NYSAIS Indoor Championship, including a gold medal finish in the 4x200m relay in a school record time of 1:49.62. In addition to the 4x200m relay, the Sabers again sent three additional individual qualifiers to the NYS Federation Championship, a repeat feat that reflects the program's consistent excellence.
In the 2017-18 inaugural AAIS Indoor Track Championship the Sabers had 17 top three finishes across the meet’s 14 events, scoring points in 13 of the 14 events. The 2017-18 team went on to finish third at the NYSAISAA State Championship, with three individual student-athletes and the 4x400m relay qualifying for the NY Federation Championship.
A model of excellence since its inception, the team posted five successive seasons with Federation qualifiers. In 2015-2016, the Sabers set school records in five events and saw the 4x400m relay team compete at the prestigious Eastern States Championship and the NY State Federation State Championship. In 2013, the first season of indoor track competition for Spence, the team won the Sacred Heart Invitational and sent the school’s first relay team to compete at the NY State Federation Indoor Championship. The team also had its first competitor at the prestigious Millrose Games.
The team practices Monday through Friday in Central Park and at the New Balance Armory, and competes in the Ivy Invitational Meets throughout the season. There is a continued focus on individual skill development as student-athletes strive for both personal bests as well as scoring points for the team. Students will incorporate their skills into the team meet setting for a highly challenging complete indoor track experience. Athletes are required to train in running shoes and to compete in event-appropriate shoes.
