Grade 5 Studying Birds and Hosting Ornithology Conference

Grade 5 students have become ornithologists, studying birds and their habitats as part of the Starr Grant’s ongoing Scientist in Residence Program in Middle School. Watch the video to learn more.

The students are currently working with Kaiya Provost, an ornithologist at the American Museum of Natural History, over the course of three Zoom classes. Provost is sharing her bird discoveries and research experiences, and engages the students in conversations about birds, their traits and their varied environments.
Using their learnings, students have “discovered” dozens of species of birds, imagining their colorful habitats, diets and traits. They presented their findings, including original renderings of the birds, at the Spence Ornithology Conference. Don’t miss this video, which showcases the Grade 5 scientists’ great work. Way to go, Grade 5!
