Congratulations to the 2020 Distinguished Alumna Award Recipient!
Allyson Mitchell Waterman ’85 is the recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Alumna Award in recognition of both her professional accomplishments and endless devotion to Spence.
Allyson has been a tireless volunteer for Spence and has held a variety of volunteer leadership positions. Currently, she serves on the Board of Trustees, is a Nominating Co-Chair of the Alumnae Board and sits on the Reunion Committee for her 35th Reunion. She also serves as the President of the Spence Parents’ Association. Previously, Allyson has held positions as Outreach Co-Chair, Co-Chair of the 125th Celebration of Spence and an Annual Fund Class Representative. She was also a Planned Giving Co-Chair and she is a member of the 1892 Planned Giving Society. She is an IndiSPENCEable, having given consecutively to the Spence Annual Fund for more than 10 years.
Allyson attended Marymount Manhattan College and majored in art history, with a minor in French and mathematics. She began her career at NBC News, before transitioning to fundraising and special events. She served as an associate in the Development Department at Memorial Sloan Kettering and as a freelance project director at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. From 2001 to 2010, Allyson worked at Condé Nast Publications as special projects director for Lucky magazine, overseeing editorial promotions, marketing, special events and philanthropic outreach and partnerships. Additionally, she served as the national television spokesperson for Lucky, appearing regularly on the “Today” show and “Good Morning America.” She also hosted ABC’s “Road to the Red Carpet” at the 2007 Academy Awards.
Allyson’s other charitable interests have included 12 years as a volunteer counselor at Camp Happy Days for Children with Cancer, and working with Sanctuary for Families, Typhoon Yolanda Relief, The African Dream Academy, Children’s Rights and Coalition for the Homeless. Allyson lives in New York City with her husband, Tod, and their two children, Olivia, Spence Class of 2022, Philip, who is in Grade 4 at Riverdale, along with Daisy Waterman, their beloved dog.
