Mathematics Department Head

To begin August 2022

Spence seeks an accomplished educator to build on the Mathematics Department’s established reputation of innovation and excellence in pedagogy and curriculum. This position represents an opportunity to lead a group of committed and passionate educators in the continual refinement of our problem-centered, student-centered curriculum in Grades 5-12 and Harkness-table structure in Grades 8-12.

  • Oversee mathematics curriculum in Grades 5-12 and ensure continuity with the Lower School
  • Establish and support the department’s ongoing goals 
  • Plan and lead department meetings
  • Lead math department hiring in collaboration with the administrative team
  • Serve as immediate supervisor to 12±4 department members
  • Monitor department members’ individual professional development, goal-setting and evaluations
  • Represent the department at admissions and outreach events
  • Lead ongoing parent education and communicate with parents about the program
  • Manage department business and budget 
  • Oversee course sectioning and staffing
  • Teach 3 sections in Middle School or 3 sections in Upper School
  • Serve as advisor to students in Middle or Upper School
  • Finds joy in working with children and in school life 
  • Leads with energy, kindness, empathy and a sense of humor
  • Demonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives
  • Supports Spence’s commitment to equity
  • Has sustained teaching experience
  • Appreciates the importance of mathematics education for girls
  • Possesses successful departmental or equivalent school-leadership experience
  • Embraces a student-centered and problem-centered approach to mathematics curriculum and pedagogy
  • Demonstrates an ability to foster sustained collaboration and professional growth within a team
  • Demonstrates skills in communications and interpersonal relations within and across multiple constituencies
  • Holds advanced degree or equivalent experience
