The Spence Lower School seeks an experienced Spanish/FLES immersion teacher for a one-semester leave replacement. This language educator will work with the Lower School Spanish Team, the Head of the Lower School, and other members of the Lower School faculty to plan and implement immersion classes in grades three and four, following the established Spanish program.

Responsibilities
  • Teach 18 sections of Grade 3 and Grade 4 Spanish in the target language, with an emphasis on helping students advance their listening and verbal skills at the novice level.
  • Write comprehensive student progress reports (i.e. progress narratives) at the end of the Spring term
  • Teach heritage speakers in Grades 3 and 4
  • Attend all Lower School faculty and Modern and Classical Languages Department meetings as scheduled
  • Participate in on-site professional development
  • Collaborate with the Lower School Spanish team, the Lower School leadership team and with the entire Lower School faculty ensuring a developmentally appropriate, joyful, culturally authentic and safe environment for learning Spanish
Qualifications
  • Is fluent in Spanish.
  • Possesses an advanced degree or equivalent experience.
  • Has sustained elementary classroom experience
  • Finds joy in working with children and in school life
  • Is a caring, nurturing and energetic individual
  • Possesses knowledge of Total Physical Response (TPR) techniques, storytelling, cooperative games, children’s songs, and traditional games
  • Demonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Supports Spence’s commitment to equity
  • Approaches work with responsibility, kindness, maturity, curiosity, flexibility and a sense of humor
  • Regards collaboration as an essential component of professional growth and values working on a team
