Middle and Upper School Learning Specialist

Full-time position to begin September 2019

Spence looks for a dynamic Middle and Upper School Resource Team member for a full-time position. Qualified applicants should bring broad expertise working with students with diagnosed learning disabilities, know how to foster a sense of independence and self-confidence. They should be able to provide pedagogical strategies, resources, and guidance for classroom teachers, and support families in the enrichment of student learning. They should also have ample experience working in close collaboration with middle and upper school students, classroom teachers, and families.

  • Provide direct support to middle school & upper school students through co-teaching, one on one and small group instruction
  • Partner with psychoeducational evaluators, families, and tutors
  • Review psychoeducational evaluations, summarize and provide information to classroom teachers and administrators
  • Partner with classroom teachers on student learning
  • Proactively contribute to the growth of the Resource Center
  • Support teachers, administrators, and parents’ understandings of academically vulnerable students
  • Foster the school’s understanding of an inclusive approach to teaching

  • Has sustained teaching experience with middle and/or upper school students with diagnosed learning disabilities
  • Has advanced degree or equivalent experience working with students with diagnosed learning disabilities
  • Demonstrates skill in working with children and an appreciation for the craft of teaching
  • Has experience teaching math to students with diagnosed learning disabilities (preferred)
  • Finds joy in working with young people and in school life
  • Demonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Supports Spence’s vision and commitment to equity

  • Has a sense of humor
  • Considers collaboration an essential component of professional growth and values working on a team
