Spence kicked-off the post season in style, with Varsity Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball all in action in the AAIS Quarterfinal round of their respective league tournaments on Monday.
In soccer, the #1 seed and regular season champions took to the pitch and quickly pounced on their opponents, scoring twice in the game’s opening two minutes, and never looked back. Spence scored 5 first half goals and added another two markers early in the second frame, peppering their opponent with 15 shots on goal and a stifling ball possession game. With the victory, Spence advances to the AAIS Semifinal for the second time in the last 3 years and will take on upset-minded #5 Brearley, who toppled #4 Marymount in their quarterfinal game. The AAIS Semifinal will be played at 3:30 p.m. on Randall’s Island #74. The winner will advance to the AAIS Championship game on Friday.
In tennis, the #7 Sabers put up a valiant fight but could not take down #2 Marymount in their quarterfinal match. The youthful Spence team clawed their way to the #7 seed with scrappy and determined play throughout the season, and their Quarterfinal match featured more of the same. At #1 singles Clare L., and #1 doubles Morgan H. and Charlotte M.; #2 singles Cate S., and #2 doubles Paige T. and Lila d.F.; and #3 singles Mimi G., all made the most of their first AAIS tournament match experience, representing Spence with the True Blue price they have displayed all season. While their season ends with the defeat, there is little doubt that they not only came together as a team, but learned the value of team work and working to exceed expectations. Congratulations, Sabers!
In the last contest of the day, #4 volleyball played a heart stopping 5 game match. The Sabers and #5 Sacred Heart were locked in the typical tug-o-war for momentum between two evenly matched teams. Spence dropped game 1, fought back to take games 2 and 3, before dropping game 4 to set the match at even. Sacred Heart raced out to an 11-4 lead in the 5th and deciding game, played to 15, but with their backs against the wall, the Big Cats dug deep, going on a monster run to push the match to 15 -15. With the hearts of the huge crowd at Sacred Heart’s gym thundering, the Sabers seized the moment and the pawtastic game 5 victory, 17-15, to advance to the AAIS Semifinal on Wednesday versus #1 Chapin at 4:45 p.m., Sacred Heart Field House.
It was a great day to be True Blue! Now, come out and Roar with the Sabers on Wednesday in the AAIS Semifinals!
