After a lengthy hiatus, JV Basketball returned to Spence this season and they are doing it in style! With their third straight victory, the Sabers are peaking at absolutely the best time of the season! With stingy team defense and a transition offense that puts their opponents through the wringer, the Sabers pounced on their home court advantage on Monday, in front of a roaring crowd at the Den in the AAIS Quarterfinal.
Spence raced out to a 9-2 first quarter lead by turning defense into offense with freshman guard, Ava C. pushing tempo, scoring 5 of the team’s points in the opening frame. In the second quarter the Sabers found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger, with Packer fighting their way back into the game to make it a 4-point game at the half.
In the third quarter, it was a see-saw battle with the momentum swinging back and forth as both teams battled to establish their up-tempo attack and press their opponents into turn-overs. Strong defense on the glass from freshmen, Charlotte M., Brooke W., Evelyn W. and Lindsay S. was critical to the team's success. The Sabers featured a balanced attack and ability to break the press, using the entire court, which proved to be the difference in the critical stretch of the game. Sophomore Olivia D. and freshmen, Mena S., Beatrice C. and Ava all scored in the 14-point stanza, staking Spence to a commanding 23-16 lead.
The Big Cats did not look back in the fourth and final quarter, playing a stout defensive frame and shutting down lanes to the basket, holding Packer to 3 points. Freshmen, Lila S. and Beatrice put the finishing touches on the 29-19 victory sending the Sabers to the AAIS semifinal for the first time in the last 8 years!
#4 seeded Spence will continue the hunt for an AAIS title, facing top seeded Convent of the Sacred Heart in the semifinal round on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the CSH Wellness and Athletic Center.
