On a picturesque autumn day, the harriers of Spence took to the 4K course at Van Cortlandt Park, eager to Saber The Moment in the AAIS Cross Country Championship! Running fast and taking chances, at when the runners had crossed the finish line, the Sabers had each of their top 5 runners collect medals, for the first time in school history.
Individually, senior, Eloise F. torched the course in a blazing 16:11 for a 2nd place finish. With personal best times falling like the leaves from the autumn trees, senior, Sara Rose S. finished 11th (17:36), junior, Caroline C. finished 15th (18:01), sophomore, Brooke P. finished 20th (18:29), junior, Emma H. finished 25th (18:49), junior Hadley H. finished 29th (18:49) and senior Amanda T. finished 50th (21:16).
In the JV race, Spence had strong performances from sophomore, Sophie A., senior, Charlotte G., sophomore, Kayla D., freshman, Julia F. and junior, Divya M.
As a team, every place in the Varsity Championship race was critical, and the Sabers are clearly peaking at the right time, with their best individual and collective day on the Van Cortlandt Park course this season. The Sabers’ strong performance captured the 3rd place trophy, but by only a single place, edging out Convent of the Sacred Heart by the slimmest of margins. The two teams had battled similarly only a couple of weeks ago, but as they say, turnabout is fair play and this time the Sabers clawed their way to a spot on the podium.
On Sunday, November 4, Spence will again take to the course at Van Cortlandt Park for the NYSAISAA Championship. The Sabers will look to set another benchmark for the Cross Country program in what is shaping up to be one of the most exciting weekends in team history!
