The 1892 Society
recognizes individuals and families who choose to provide for the future of the school by including Spence in their estate planning. By joining The 1892 Society, members play an essential role in ensuring Spence’s continued financial health and tradition of academic excellence.

The three Heads of School who established the Society in Spence’s Centennial year chose the hawthorn tree as the Society’s emblem in honor of Clara Spence. After Miss Spence’s death in 1923, alumnae planted an English hawthorn in her memory near the 96th Street entrance to Central Park. This hardy, flowering tree is an inspiring symbol for Miss Spence’s lasting legacy.
Members of The 1892 Society are:
- Listed with gratitude in the school’s Annual Report
- Invited to a reception by the Head of School each spring
- Presented with a pin representing the hawthorn tree as a symbol of membership
