How to Make a Gift

Every gift to Spence counts. Whether the gift is large or small, it manifests your confidence in the school’s educational program and our mission. The Spence community of donors—alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae, grandparents, trustees, faculty, staff, administrators and friends—all help sustain our school.

Thank you for your generosity.

Cash Gifts

The majority of gifts to Spence have traditionally been in the form of cash contributions paid in cash, by check or money order. Such gifts are tax-deductible to the donor. Please mail your gift to The Spence School, c/o Development Office, 22 East 91st Street, New York, NY 10128.

Credit Card Gifts

Credit card donations, also tax-deductible, can be paid by Visa, MasterCard or American Express. You may make a credit card gift by: using our online contribution form; printing, completing and mailing the online gift form to the Development Office; telephoning the Development Office at 212-710-8130.

Gifts of Securities

By giving appreciated long-term stock directly to Spence, you may receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full value of the stock. Gifts of securities are valued at the median price on the date of transfer to Spence. Stock can either be delivered to the school or transferred electronically. Read details on how to make a gift of securities to Spence or you may contact Gardenia Ferrond in the Development Office at 646-943-6866 or gferrond@spenceschool.org.

Matching Gifts

More than 1,000 companies match donations made by their employees and retirees to independent schools. The value of an individual’s gift can be doubled—even tripled—through corporate matching gifts. Since matching gifts must be initiated by the donor, please inquire whether your employer has such a program, and if so, obtain the proper forms to forward with your contribution. We fill out and return the form to your company, which will then issue a matching gift contribution directly to Spence. A Spence donor receives full credit for both the original gift and the amount of the match.

Gifts of Tangible Property/Gifts-in-Kind

Gifts-in-kind are tangible items such as works of art, equipment, books, furniture, antiques, real estate and similar non-monetary contributions. If you are considering a contribution of tangible property, please be in touch with Carolyn Chaliff in the Development Office at 646-943-6823 or cchaliff@spenceschool.org.

Planned Gifts and Bequests

Individuals may make a planned gift to Spence through bequests, charitable trusts, retirement plans, insurance policies and life income gifts. Such contributions enable a donor to make a significant gift to the school in the future, while providing immediate or estate tax benefits. The Spence School honors donors of planned or deferred gifts with membership in The 1892 Society. Please note that tax consequences for estate planning depend on an individual’s particular circumstances and should be reviewed with financial and/or legal counsel. For more information, please call or write Carolyn Chaliff at 646-943-6823 or cchaliff@spenceschool.org.
