Middle School Language Immersion Program

The Interschool Language Immersion Program is a two week program designed to offer Interschool students entering Grades 5-9 a unique opportunity to improve their communication skills in Spanish, French or Mandarin. Developed in collaboration with The Dalton School and The New York Interschool Association, the program reinforces and extends existing language skills beyond traditional classroom learning by taking advantage of the rich cultural and linguistic opportunities in New York City.

Who Should Apply

This program is open to all Interschool students entering Grades 5-9. To participate in the program, students must have had at least one year of exposure to the language. Students of all levels of language proficiency are encouraged to participate, from those who excel to those who are beginning to build new language competencies.

Deadline Extended—Space Available.
Apply via the Interschool Web site.

Schedule

The program consists of one two-week session and runs Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program takes place at The Dalton School (108 East 89th Street in Manhattan).

The mornings will consist of mostly oral activities, such as acting out a skit or discussing a culture entirely in their chosen language. Students will spend their afternoons engaged in hands-on, culturally specific activities, such as preparing meals, playing sports and visiting culturally and linguistically appropriate sites in the city. All of the instruction will be done in the target language and assisted by visuals, body language, miming, repetition and acting.
