Teaching is an art, a creative endeavor

Our educators teach students at every stage of development, starting in the Lower School where the younger learners benefit from the friendly and intimate atmosphere. Middle and Upper School faculty teach across the grades and come to know each student well through the years.

More than two-thirds of Spence faculty members hold advanced degrees. Many of our teachers have years of experience in their subject areas. They fully support the students in the process of getting an education—not only in the classroom but also by serving as advisors and supervising extracurricular activities.

Spence teachers bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the school, experience that is enhanced by continuing opportunities for professional development. Teachers are encouraged to submit proposals for curriculum grants, apply for financial support to pursue advanced degrees and request grants for extracurricular projects. The Board of Trustees further supports the faculty with a commitment to offer competitive salaries and benefits. Opportunities for professional and personal growth and a collegial environment combine to make Spence a compelling place to teach.

In our view, a dynamic faculty that reflects a diversity of professional experience promotes a vigorous teaching culture, one in which the exchange of ideas is welcomed. The ultimate beneficiaries of this collaboration are the students because they are taught by individuals who are passionate about what they do and are supported in their efforts.
