Spence Awarded the LEED for Schools Gold Award
By Annabel Darling ’14
This April, The Spence School received the gold level of certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The honor in receiving this award comes from the time and dedication put into the school not only as a rigorous learning environment, but as a sustainable and verified green building institution.
LEED pushes past the simple saying of just going green and implements a design to “inspire project teams to seek innovative solutions that are better for our environment and better for our communities” as stated in its manifesto online.
Since Spence has obtained this certification it guarantees that the School meets the criteria for being a leader and an “active participant in the green building movement,” as noted by S. Richard Fedrizzi, CEO and Founding Chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council. He added, “The Spence School is a showcase example of sustainable design and demonstrates your leadership in transforming the building industry.”
This great achievement proves Spence’s “commitment to our common goal of building a healthy, sustainable future.”
