Sabers Roar to an AAIS Varsity Volleyball Tournament Championship

Congratulations to the 2014 AAIS Varsity Volleyball Tournament Champions!
The Sabers’ fans, donned in their True Blue, took the Brearley Field House by storm! The energy in the building was palpable before the match against rival Chapin even began. The Sabers’ Pack was clearly invested, building an unquestionably amped atmosphere that continued to grow in volume, passion and intensity with each point played.

There was every reason for the raucous celebratory feeling in the air: the Sabers roared onto the court in game 1 behind crushing returns from senior Kate A. ’15 and the immense “Blue Wall” of seniors Kassie C. ’15 and Kate ’15, junior Maddie F. ’16 and freshmen Grace S. ’18 and Sophie A. ’18. The Blue Wall turned away virtually every early Chapin attack, and the vibe was in the building—this match was going to be special!

The Spence service game of Livia S., Maddie, Philly O. and Natalie B. was relentless. The first game of the match was played at breakneck speed thanks to the pursuit and control play of Natalie and Philly, putting the ball back into play time and time again. The crowd of spectators barely had time to catch its collective breath before game two got underway.

The second and third games featured a bit more even play, with Chapin looking to wrestle control of the tempo from the Sabers. Kate and Maddie continued to dominate at the net with thunderous kills, opening up the attack for Gracie and Sophie on the wings. The freshmen tandem aggressively attacked from the outside, keeping Chapin off-balance. As Chapin closed the gap and went on a five-point “mini-run,” it was the conductor of the Sabers’ freight train, senior Frances L. ’15, who put the match squarely back on track, shooting a perfectly placed ball into the deep corner, skying for solo block and later hammering the ball deep into the back court for a guaranteed kill. The Sabers were not going to be denied.

The Sabers’ faithful fanned the flames late in the critical and dramatic third game raising their unified voices and lifting the team with their “I Believe” and “Let’s Go Spence” chants. Chapin tied the third game at 24, but the Sabers had their goal squarely in their sights. With Frances stepping back to the service line, at 25-24 she sent her signature float service into the Chapin back court, and the Sabers watched as the Chapin return could not find the court, sailing deep beyond the back line, setting off a True Blue celebration.
