From the Head of School

Thank you for visiting our Web site. We invite you to explore and experience the dynamic world of The Spence School. We are a diverse community of enthusiastic, scholastically motivated girls in Grades Kindergarten through 12, taught by a devoted and passionate faculty, and where learning is supported by a caring administration, Board of Trustees and an active group of Alumnae. Our Parents' Association enhances the school community by sponsoring events, raising funds and bolstering Spence’s camaraderie.

Founded by Clara Spence in 1892, our 120-year tradition of high academic standards prepares our girls for the demands of college and beyond. Her vision of enriching each individual’s mind, spirit and heart continues today. Please visit the History section of our Web site and get to know Clara Spence whose strength, drive, and commitment laid the foundation for our school.

It is this foundation that enables Spence girls to learn in an unselfconscious, single-sex environment. They approach academics and extra-curricular activities head-on with the careful leadership and guidance of our exceptionally well-qualified faculty. Students are encouraged to dig deep and ask questions, understanding that learning is a lifelong process, beyond an exam or diploma. Day-to-day, they aspire to their school motto “Not for school, but for life we learn.”

We welcome you to navigate our virtual world and discover how much Spence has to offer in our academic curriculum, athletics, performing and visual arts, community service and extracurricular activities.

Enjoy the journey.
